USO Calls for Reflection and Remembrance on Memorial Day
May 28, 2018

USO

Dear Friends,

As you celebrate the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, I encourage you to take a few minutes to reflect on the true purpose of the holiday. Dating back to the Civil War – when it was known as “Decoration Day” – flowers were placed on the graves of fallen soldiers in remembrance of those who served, and also to honor the freedom they fought for.

In his Memorial Day speech, President Harry S. Truman said,

“Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifices.”

The spirit of this day has not changed. It remains a day to honor those who died defending our democracy.

If you have a friend or loved one who is an active-duty service member, or if you knew a hero who made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our freedom, then this holiday likely carries an even deeper meaning.

I hope you know just how much your heartfelt support means to our active-duty service members around the world.

Please join the USO in a moment of silence at noon on Memorial Day to honor our American heroes. Together, we will remember the selfless bravery of the men and women who gave their lives for our great country.

Sincerely,

J.D. Crouch II
CEO & President, USO
