Congresswoman Barbara Lee will reflect on the 20 years she has spent representing Oakland and the East Bay in Congress. First elected as U.S. representative for California’s 9th (now 13th) Congressional District in 1998, she has enjoyed a storied career, including stints within the California State Assembly and State Senate.
During her time in Congress, Lee has advocated for LGBTQ rights, minority rights, women's rights and an end to the cycle of poverty. Most notably, she was the lone vote against the War on Terror, which was lauded by the anti-war community. Today, she serves on the House Appropriations Committee and the House Committee on the Budget, and previously served as chair of the Congressional Black Caucus.
Lee was first elected to represent California's 9th Congressional District in 1998. Her initial foray into politics came while working on Congresswoman Shirley Chisolm’s historic presidential campaign while attending Mills College in Oakland during which time she served as Chisholm’s delegate at the 1972 Democratic National Convention in Miami. Lee received her MSW from the UC Berkeley where she specialized in psychiatric social work, after receiving her undergraduate degree at Mills College.
Emmy award winning journalist Belva Davis was the first African American to become a television reporter on the West Coast. The Oakland native worked for KSAN Radio, KNEW, and later for KTVU, KRON, KPIX, and KQED TV news, both as a reporter and host.Her new book is a memoir, Never in My Wildest Dreams: A Black Woman's Life in Journalism. Davis launched her career writing articles for The Sun Reporter and the Bay Area Independent. She has received numerous accolades throughout her career, including eight Emmy awards and recognition from the American Women in Radio and Television and National Association of Black Journalists.
