From Montgomery to Oakland

Dear Friends,

In case you missed my speech last week, I spoke fresh from my trip to Montgomery, Alabama, and a walk across the historic Edmund Pettus Bridge. I had a great trip to the Legacy Museum, the National Museum for Peace and Justice, and the Mothers of Gynecology Park.

I participated in a 3-day conference with progressive prosecutors from across the nation committed to making social change, protecting public safety and ending mass incarceration. We are part of a new generation of prosecutors supported by Fair and Just Prosecution. We shared our journey with members of the Incarcerated Children’s Advocacy Network (ICAN), a national network of returning citizens who were sentenced to life in prison as youth.

The National Memorial for Peace and Justice, which opened to the public on April 26, 2018, is the nation’s first memorial dedicated to the legacy of enslaved Black people, people terrorized by lynching, African Americans humiliated by racial segregation and Jim Crow, and people of color burdened with contemporary presumptions of guilt and police violence. 

The Legacy Museum provides a comprehensive history of the United States with a focus on the legacy of slavery. From the Transatlantic Slave Trade and its impact on the North and coastal communities across America through the Domestic Slave Trade and Reconstruction, the museum provides interactive content and compelling narratives of lynching, codified racial segregation, and the emergence of over-incarceration in the 20th century. 

Situated on a site where enslaved Black people were forced to labor in bondage, the Legacy Museum offers an immersive experience with cutting-edge technology, world-class art, and critically important scholarship about American history.

My trip to Montgomery was deeply impactful in reminding me why I serve this community. The gathering of like-minded prosecutors from around the country was inspiring and uplifting. Each of us is "a drum major for justice."

Jackie Wright, CEO of Wright Enterprises conceived and developed the program that gives women well paid training opportunities, is pleased to get reports of women who have benefited from the experience.
