Consumer Action In-person train-the-trainer on navigating smartphone/computer warranty rights

Dear Community Partner,

Earlier this year, the Pew Research Center reported that 9 in 10 Americans own a smartphone, and that it's especially common for households with lower income and lower formal education levels to rely on them for internet access. Since the smartphones, tablets and computers that consumers depend on to stay connected take a significant bite out of the household budget, it’s important for consumers to understand their options and rights when it comes to protecting their investment. 

We are inviting consumer educators, counselors, case managers, social services providers and advocates to a free, in-person training on smartphone, tablet and computer warranty rights. Our in-person train-the-trainer session, being held in Oakland on May 22, will feature presentations by speakers offering practical information to help your clients understand and assert their consumer warranty rights when dealing with defective or malfunctioning devices and make informed choices about optional extended warranties and device insurance. 

Presenters:

  • Attorney Elliot Conn, founder and principal of Conn Law, PC, will provide an overview of consumer warranty rights, discuss how digital device warranties work, and provide tips on filing warranty claims and anticipating potential warranty disputes.
  • Nathan Proctor, senior director of US PIRG's Campaign for the Right to Repair, will discuss the new California "right to repair" law, how the law interacts with smartphone and computer warranty laws, and what we can expect as the law takes effect this summer.

AFC professionals can earn 1.5 CEUs for participation in this free training.
