San Francisco International Film Festival Reigns Strong in Year 56

San Francisco-April 5, 2013- The 56th San Francisco International Film Festival kicks off April 25 and runs though May 9, 2013. With over 80 films from around the world you would be world's toughest critic not to like at least three films.

Being a San Francisco native and filmmaker, the festival is a natural fit.  However, I have not been to the festival in over 5 years.    I had worked with the festival to select and bring a film called "She's Gotta Have It" along with Mr. Lee, "back in the day...day"  to the San Francisco International Film Festival.  During that time and  the subsequent 16 years since we were in the planning mode for the Cannes International Film Festival, which is always held in May.
Cornelius Moore, Co-Director of California Newsreel and Jacquie Taliaferro, Director of LaHitz Media, Filmmaker, & Cannes Consultant Spotlight the SFIFF at Press Briefing at the Fairmont Hotel.

In 2012,  LaHitz Media took "Straight Out of Hunters Point II" by SF Filmmaker Kevin Epps and two other projects to Cannes.  Over the last 5 years, Cannes has changed greatly with buyers and distributors mostly working on films with Big Stars & Big Budgets. ----  With huge theater chains dominating the global market and independent theater ownership coming to a vanishing point,  films like Kevin's, Mario Van Peebles' "We The Party,"  Robert Townsend's "In the Hive" are finding it hard to locate their audience.  These films were big hits on the festival circuit ,"In The Hive" opened The San Francisco Black Film Festival last year to a sold out house at the Lorraine Hansberry Theatre (then located on Post Street).

The San Francisco International Film Festival is one of the oldest and most successful Film Festivals in the US. It is very well financed with its budget more than double the combined budgets of The Pan African Film Festival in L. A. (held in February), The San Francisco Black Film Festival, (June 13-16, 2013) and the Oakland International Film Festival (now-through April 7th).

Just a few years younger than the Cannes International Film Festival, the San Francisco International Film Festival's 56th opening night film is "What Maisie Knew" starring Julianne Moore.  For more information go to SFIFF.org!
