Condemns Desecration of Oakland Menorah

December 14, 2023

The San Francisco Interfaith Council joins Jewish, interfaith and civic organizations throughout the Bay Area in condemning the desecration and destruction of Oakland's largest menorah on December 13, the sixth night of Hanukkah.

The violent destruction of the 350-pound steel menorah unmistakably brings the effects of the conflict on the other side of the world close to home. We claim our role in building a community founded on trust and mutual responsibility. We decry anti-Semitism and the hatred that infects too many hearts, and lament the fear and anguish suffered by those who bear its scars. We pray for the victims as well as the public officials charged with rendering justice. We remain vigilant with our Jewish neighbors, striving to protect houses of worship and the sacred symbols and practices of our diverse faiths.

Hanukkah is a festival of light in the darkness, and faithful hope in the face of oppression. On this, the last night of Hanukkah, may we continue to kindle lights for the darkness of this time, and hope for those who fear.
