Community Profile: Safi of KPOO & KPFA
May 30, 2015

Safi wa Nairobi has been producing radio for both KPOO, San Francisco, and KPFA, Berkeley, since 2004.  In addition to researching, interviewing, editing, mixing and operating the sound board, Safi 's artistic creativity extends to the visual arts: still photography, videography and film.

Current projects include a weekly broadcast on KPOO, San Francisco (For the People); a monthly collaboration with Bay Area Jazz and Blues Artists (B.A.J.A.B.A.) on KPFA, Berkeley; a documentary (One of Minnie: The Fillmore Story) about Minnie's Can-Do Club, a thriving community gathering spot back in the late 1960's and early 1970's; as well as a documentary about people with disabilities emmersed into the workforce, recreational world and the arts.

Having travelled to more than 100 countries, Safi's work are inspired heavily by the African Diaspora and all music associated therewith.  Safi's work--both audio and visual--reflect a spiritual exchange between subject and self; none of the work are unilateral.
